0006284: tg3 driver link speed drops to 100MBps

On a brand new HP n54l the link speed goes down from 1000Mbps to 100Mbps and stays there. Mostly its a matter of some Network activity until the speed drops. The onboard card is a NC107i (Broadcom).

Same with the broadcom driver (Broadcom Homepage). Both drivers always drop speed short after boot and the 1st packets arrive. I never got anything over there with NFS on a 1000Mbps link.

The HP driver is different. The HP Driver (HP support Page) sometimes works with 1000Mbps over hours if reload after a boot. With this driver its possible to get some Gigs through at 1000Mbps - but sometimes the driver also goes back to 100Mbps.

There is no indication why this happens:

tg3 0000:02:00.0: eth0: Link is down
tg3 0000:02:00.0: eth0: Link is up at 100 Mbps, full duplex
tg3 0000:02:00.0: eth0: Flow control is on for TX and on for RX

Its not cable or switch related - other host work with 1000Mbps on the same port with the same cable. I tried with and without jumbo frames - same result. The managed switch shows no errors on that port.

Strange is that after adding a encrypted share the speed drops also hits the HP driver - but this could also be unrelated.
