In an effort to get the display to sleep, using the GUI, I set the Power Management Preferences -> Display inactivity period to a value less than the Screensaver idle timeout which, indeed, caused the display to sleep. Attempting to regain control of the system, by moving the mouse or entering keystrokes, was impossible without using the power switch (system crash).
